“The whole world is our homeland” and “We cannot stop as long as there are poor to be assisted and their sufferings are to be alleviated”- St. Louis Guanella was the profound spiritual inspiration that kept St. Luigi Guanella, the founder of the Servants of Charity, awake through the night, fervently praying and strategizing. His vision of extending mission in India was realized when a parcel of land was acquired in 1986 for the Servants of Charity in Achampattu, and later in 1993 in Nagamalai Pudukottai, Madurai, in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, which is an ancient and vibrant city situated on the banks of the Vaigai River, is often referred to as the “Athens of the East” due to its rich historical and cultural significance. This endeavour was significantly supported by Rev. Fr. Lukas, a Cleartian priest, whose assistance was instrumental in these initiatives. Hard effort and ceaseless endeavour of our fathers in depth ignited a spark of new community namely “Soosai Thottam” in Nagamalai Pudukottai, Madurai. The community is located 10 kilometers from the heart of Madurai. St. Louis Guanella
